Boons and Favors on Advancement

I was contacted recently with a question about purchasing Boons during character advancement. My answer was basically "Why not?"

Boons and Favors were intended to be used during character creation, but there's no reason why they couldn't be earned later on. As long as the GM and players agree, I see no problem with it. Boon, Favors, Scourges, and Burdens were always meant to balance with Edges and Hindrances. There may be a few that are slightly under- or overpowered, but only slightly.

Also, if everyone agrees to allow this, I don't think Scourges or Burdens should be required to balance Boons or Favors. Since Boons and Favors are similar in scope and power to Edges, requiring the player to take Scourges or Burdens would probably feel a little punative.

Of course, situations vary and fun is always the ultimate goal. So, I try to keep that in mind any time I tweak the rules.

Cheers,

Mark
